Preston Station - Past & Present

Perhaps surprisingly, Preston is currently without a rail link to Southport, but until the 1960s it had two. The less-direct of the two which ran via Burscough was lost due to the closure of a small chord, "Burscough Curve", at the crossing-point of the Preston-Ormskirk and Wigan-Southport lines. There is currently talk of restoring Burscough Curve, allowing Preston-Southport trains to resume after a 40 year absence.

Sadly, the more direct route, the West Lancshire Railway, is now gone, probably forever, but the route via Burscough could one day be reinstated.
