Like the Preston terminus at Fishergate
Hill, Southport Central had a very short life as a passenger station,
being relegated to goods-only when the L&YR diverted passenger trains
to their own ststion at Chapel Street.
These
photos show the former Southport Central station prior to demolition in
June 1986. The grand nature of the station is perhaps a clear indication
of the over-ambitious nature of the WLR, which was very quickly to be its
undoing.
